01 - Gustave DOLLFUS (1829-1905)

--- In memory: Algerian tribute to Gustave DOLLFUS ---

In 1905, this Mulhouse patron died out on his Algerian property. A notable Muslim paid him a homage. Jean-Charles WINNLEN, doctor in social history, has just discovered a fascinating document while he carries out the last works of a book to be published soon.

This document includes the tribute given by Mohammed KHELLA, notable of the small town of Djidjelli (near Constantine), east of Algeria, in front of the coffin of Gustave DOLLFUS, January 15, 1905. Landowner, member of the CCI (Chamber of Commerce and Industry), this notable pronounces these words: "On behalf of the Muslim population and my colleagues, I come to bid farewell to our late Mr. Gustave DOLLFUS, the friendly and charitable man who has rendering great services to Muslims ".

The Mulhouse industrialist had inherited land in Algeria in 1879. He then expanded this property to bring it to 10,000 hectares to cultivate, among others, cork. He had also made great efforts in the cleansing of land, built a school, laid out roads and a sanatorium. Until independence, a Djidjelli square bore his name as a reminder of his role in community ties.

--- Patronage and agriculture ---

Born in Mulhouse in 1829, Gustave DOLLFUS was the prototype of the industrialists of this city. He had succeeded his father at the head of DOLLFUS-MIEG & Cie in 1856. Member of the Industrial Society, he was known as a patron but also to be a man close to nature. He was also a landowner in his area of origin. He had set up an agricultural research laboratory in his farm estate in Riedisheim.

As an industrialist he had also practiced a state-of-the-art social policy for the time in his factories located at the Mer-Rouge and Belfort. This policy was recognized to the point that workers were inspired to claim an improvement in their condition in other textile factories.

Heritage was not indifferent to him. His efforts included the rescue of the stained glass windows of the Saint-Etienne church.
